Greenwich Comedy Festival – right first time

A new London festival of mirth kicks off with some BIG comedy names that we haven’t seen round these parts for a while…

The Greenwich Comedy Festival cranks up for the very first time today, and far from having any early jitters, it has some absolutely belting line-ups. Best of all, they are something of a departure from the usual circuit suspects. How often do you browse through LondonisFunny’s famously easy-to-read, a-breeze-to-navigate listings and see the name Rob Newman? Or Kevin Eldon? Or Mark Watson? Or Arthur Smith or John Cooper Clarke or Ardal O’Hanlon or Jo Brand or Tommy Tiernan or Sean Hughes?

A highly impressive feat, and they are all crammed into just the one week. Neither does the quality doesn’t sag when you get into the circuit regulars who are also performing – such as Phil Kay, Russell Howard, Jon Richardson, Pete Firman, Rich Hall, Shappi Khorsandi, Rich Hall, Andrew Lawrence Hans Teeuwen, Sarah Millican, John Hegley and a bunch of others.

Then there are the venues. This being Greenwich, they have the immediate advantage of being in Greenwich, one of London’s most lush areas. There’s yourGreenwich Theatre, and your Old Royal Naval College, both splendid places to visit.

So all in all, this festival is a wee bit special. It can’t just be coincidence that the people behind it all are related to a genuine legend of modern comedy, one Malcolm Hardee…
