Young Canadian buck Bobby Mair speaks about winning the Laughing Horse New Act award, being punched onstage and his famous relative…
Where in London do you live?
I live in Steatham Hill.
How long have you been gigging for?
I’ve been gigging for 7 years.
What do we need to know about you?
I once told a joke about a call centre at a pub. A guy was offended because he used to work at a call centre apparently. So he rushed the stage and punched me around 10 times.
What do we not need to know about you, but you’re going to tell us anyway?
I’m Justin Bieber’s third cousin. I hope to be the successful one in the family.
Who makes you laugh?
Conversations I overhear on public transit.
What was it like to win the Laughing Horse award
It was a huge suprise. I really thought the character act was going to win.
How did you celebrate?
I celebrated by sleeping. I had been awake for 40 hours due to a party the night before.
What do you hope to achieve in comedy?
Enough success that I never have to go back to medical studies. So far I’m doing it.
What do your family think of your act?
I think they like it. Well they like that I like it. That’s enough for me.
Do you have a celebrity doppelganger?
MaCauley Culkin if he did heroin.
Are you funnier onstage or offstage?
I’m not sure. I feel funniest when I get £1,000 after trying to be funny.
Do you have a secret talent?
Alienating people I let get close to me after years of knowing them.
Here’s a video of Bobby doing his thing …
Bobby is back in Canada for a little while so no London gigs at the moment, but he will be at the Edinburgh Fringe in his show Unbalanced with Michelle de Swarte, 4.50pm at Belushi’s as part of the PBH Free Fringe.
