The Spotlight on … Hatty Ashdown

She’s an ex-dancer, she’s the co-host of LiF favourite Star Search, and she’s the purveyor of ‘warm, unpretentious funnies’ – it’s Hatty Ashdown!

Hatty_Ashdown3Where in London do you live?
Brockley, saaaaff London.

How long have you been gigging for?
I’ve been around on and off for three-ish years but only really started doing it properly after my two-hander show with Darren Maskell in Edinburgh 2010.

What do we need to know about you?
Well, I do warm, inclusive, unpretentious anecdotal funnies, sometimes with props, sometimes with slides, sometimes as an MC, but always silly and with good intentions! I was co-host on Star Search with Trevor Lock, I have a podcast – because radio was my first love! – and I’m starting on a new radio station soon. Also, I AM NOT A COCKNEY! I’m from Kent – but if the gig pays right I’ll be from anywhere you like.

What do we not need to know about you, but you’re going to tell us anyway?
I can put both my hands flat on the floor … wait for it … without bending my knees.

Who makes you laugh?
Honestly, I know it may sound sickly, but my sister Tracey Hall, she’s my comedy hero. She once squashed her face up against our living room window to make my empty 7th birthday party look packed to the one person that turned up as they walked up the drive. Otherwise Josie long, Claudia O’Doherty, Bridget Christie, Marc Burrows, Nathaniel Metcalf, Robert Popper/Robin Cooper, Tony MacMurray and Alan Carr – and all my friends on the circuit, I can’t mention one and upset another or they’ll put my head down the loo AGAIN.

What do your family think of your act?
I think they are proud, especially as I was mistake and my mum thought I was the menopause. So not bad for what was originally considered to be “the change”. Although to be honest I think it does confuses my old mum, she still can’t understand why I’m not pregnant yet .. of course what she doesn’t realise is that I’m giving birth to a new form of comedy every night, haha!

If you were to appear on Parkinson as a guest, what would be your walk-on music?
You’re the One For Me, Fatty by the Smiths – but I’d give the soundman strict instructions to turn the volume down at “Fatty” so we could all shout ‘”HATTY”, Loose Women stylie.

What do you hope to achieve in comedy?
To own my own comedy club venue that isn’t a “chicken-in-a-basket” style comedy club, and bring it to the masses that only know TV stand-up.

Do you have a celebrity doppelgänger?
I don’t think so – but I’ve had people say I look like Renee Zellweger when I cry andNora Batty when I’m onstage.

Can you dance?
YES ! It’s one thing I’m not modest about. I love to dance, dance, dance! I was in 60s dance troupe The Actionettes for about four years until it wasn’t fun any more.

Do you have a secret talent?
NO WAY, if I’ve got a talent everyone’s gonna know about it.

Are you funnier off or onstage?
Falling off it.
